Different Types Of Doors For Garage Installation

February 7, 2010 · Filed Under Homes For Sale

Garage doors work best when they close straight into the garage. Here are some doors that are typical models that all use track systems to open and close, resting suspended from the ceiling to leave you maximum room and are a very simple garage installation.

Due to the fact that they suspend from the ceiling, you need to make sure you have enough space to store them. The garage needs to be slightly larger than each door, in length and width. This is to ensure that the door and the tracks fit without problems. These doors are very well loved because they leave the most space inside the garage so that you can park your car right up to the door itself.

Retractable doors are the ones that open on tracks and rest suspended on the ceiling. This means that you have more room inside and can park your car very close to the door since it won’t open inwards. It is one piece that opens upwards with the pivot points on the top of the unit. These are also said to be the most simple to automate.

Sectionals are made of 4 parts that slide up a track. They are very well loved because they slide directly up and down. They come in kits and it is said that they are the simplest to install and the most durable and secure.

There is also the canopy door. It opens up on tracks but leaves about 1/3 hanging out leaving a canopy. This could be convenient to leave some space to work just outside the garage on rainy days. They are generally one large piece and flip up instead of retracting straight up. Like the retractable door, you will need to have some clear space in front of the door upon opening.

There are many different options in terms of materials for these doors. Steel costs the most but will last the longest and takes a lot of punches. Wood is well loved for it’s style allowing for different trims and stains. It is also more high maintenance because it has to be re-painted and stained every couple of years. The last but not least is either aluminum or fiberglass. This is the cost efficient option. These are the least durable but still work well under all conditions.

Whatever the door you choose, you can do all these garage installations yourself. You can buy kits that have simple instructions and it shouldn’t take more than an afternoon.
