EaterTastings: Bastide Goes Bistro, Santa Monica Place Mall Gets a Food Court, School in Session At Mozza
The latest dish from Eater LA, Curbed’s hedonistic eating and drinking blog…
![]()
WEST HOLLYWOOD: Bastide is the Phoenix of LA restaurants. Once again, it rises from the ashes, and this time, it’s a bistro (pictured). The more casual restaurant (and apparently, Assouline bookstore) should be open for lunch next month.
SANTA MONICA: While the renovated Santa Monica Place mall near the Third Street Promenade won’t be open until late 2010, Eater gets the scoop on future food options there. Not surprisingly, expect quick-casual dining such as Charlie Kabob, Chick n’ Ribs, Pinches Tacos, Stefano’s Pizza and two sushi options.
HOLLYWOOD: School is (nearly) in session. The Mozza empire expands next week with the opening of Scuola Di Pizza. The first two cooking classes taught by co-owner Nancy Silverton and chef Matt Molina will be Italian Thanksgiving-themed. Eater reports classes cost about $150 per person and each class will be about 12 students.

Geoff Palmer Affordable Housing Fallout: As expected, all that court action…
As expected, all that court action in favor of Tuscan-themed developer Geoff Palmer has thrown a wrench in Mayor Villaraigosa’s plotted affordable housing ordinance. The Plotting Department was supposed to provide recommendations for the ordinance this month, but principal city planner Jane Blumenfeld tells the Downtown News “We can’t do what the City Council had intended to do, so we have to look at alternative ways of addressing the issues.” [Downtown News]
Mayor on Rail Projects: We Can Build All Twelve in a Decade
Possibly emboldened by the imminent Gold Line extension opening, Mayor Villaraigosa said he’s pushing hard to expedite the numerous transit projects currently in the plotting and construction stages. At the Los Angeles Business Council’s Annual Mayoral Housing, Transportation, and Jobs Summit held today at UCLA, the mayor called his push the 30/10 plot (Metro is saying it will take three decades to construct a dozen new rail and bus lines in the city, the mayor says we can do it in one), reports Streetsblog. No real specifics on this new push were unveiled (including, err, financing details), other than Villaraigosa saying he will gather a countywide coalition of support, similar to the one gathered to pass Measure R. In a press release: “Once a strong coalition of support for ‘30/10′ is built, they will reach out to Congress, the Obama Administration, and others to build support and develop a financing plot for the acceleration of the projects.”

Bank Will Even Foreclose on Shipping Containers
Sending in a listing for that long-delayed, so might say, long-suffering shipping container house in Venice, a reader writes: “This ‘house’ that Curbed did a tale on a year or so ago has been foreclosed on and is on the market. The surrounding neighbors wish the recycled container structure would be returned back to usable containers and a nice empty lot. All for only $1399000.” According to Loopnet, the home is an REO. It’s located on Innes and has been under-construction for as long as we can remember.
